The Belmont Gallery of Art invited me to both show my "House Dress Project" (final MFA show) and curate a show to compliment my pieces. I have chosen 13 women to show with me who are all making artwork speaking to the theme "A Women's Place...a discussion of being female in the 21st century".

This is going to be a powerhouse exhibition. The opening is on January 13th at 6:30PM. 19 Moore Street, 3rd floor, Belmont MA. It's the Homer building in Belmont Center behind Belmont Savings Bank. Hold that Saturday night open so you can come sip wine and celebrate with me!

First of all, in the coming days and weeks I will be posting about my final MFA show which will be held in Belmont, MA this January.

Fors starters though, I was featured in an article in Bust Magazine about a project I participated in along with about 100 other stitchers/ crafters. The project focuses on bringing attention to the refugee crisis across the world at the moment, and my quilt square shows the image of the little boy who washed up on the beach.
The creators of the project, and people who are assembling the quilt are in Australia, but the contributors hail from across the globe.

It's very exciting to have an image of my work in a BUST Magazine article!

We have arrived in Paris and I have made it through my first day of class at Ecole Lesage, where I am learning haute couture embroidery. We arrived and found the apartment we rented in the 9th arrondissement to be perfect. We spent the first day walking from cafe to cafe trying to keep ourselves awake until 9PM to kill the jet lag.
It worked! After 12 hours of sleep, I felt great!
I am starting with basic embroidery techniques, and then moving on the the advanced work later this week.

Beginning at the civilized time of 9:30AM, I had a lunch break and then continued to 5PM yesterday. Needless to say, I was totally thrilled and exhausted at the same time by the end of the first day.
For lunch, I met up with a friend's son- a baroque opera singer!- for lunch. Zach was such a great guy. We drank wine and ate traditional french food- poulette and frites- yup, chicken and french fries. I loved every minute of it.

Ok, off to stitch (I have hours of homework every night).

Pictures will come soon.

In my recent flurry of activity, not only am I developing a new body of work, but I am also proposing a new class or two for the fall.

The first is a class where I teach the basics of painting with watercolors, and then I show how to add embroidery to the painting. The second one is a faster class- a few hours- creating collages to make into "zines"- hand made pamphlets or booklets to share.

Cross your fingers that there is some interest from one of the schools I am sending the proposals to!

Here are a few pictures of the samples I have created to illustrate the watercolor/ stitching class.
Not only did the gallery really think about the best way to hang my piece, but I was able to meet, and thank, the juror- David Ross, the former director of the Whitney.
Many friends came too! Absolutely!

And as a funny aside- one of my favorite living artists- Mr. finch- a young British fiber artist- had a show across the street I was able to attend.
Lately I have been getting more questions about what my work means- what is my message. The following is the statement I use to describe my work and the issues I am concerned with that drive me to make the art...

“Bird Watching” Finding power and confidence as a woman in a still male dominated society and creating art that discusses the role of women

Women are at a crossroads. We are no longer simply fighting for equality, but must now fight to be fully represented, involved and lead.

Using images of bird skins (taxidermy birds in museums) I am stirring up an old nickname-birds- that men once used to refer to women. Some would argue that the term isn’t derogatory, and

I believe the term makes women into creatures to be dressed up or

It’s difficult to confront aging, wilting, dying, which “diminishes” a woman’s value in our world. However, having “dressed up” the wilting flowers, or dead birds, I am flipping the idea back on itself and creating beauty. So does the seemingly misogynous notion that women should be dressed up to be noticed fly in the face of being a feminist? And how does one keep her confidence in a society that sees less value in a woman as she ages? And how will we continue the struggle for full inclusion?

I hope this helps!

Cheers

Yesterday was exciting. I drove to NYC to drop off my piece for the show at First Street Gallery! I dragged a friend along (thanks Lisa) and we did the round trip Boston- NYC- Boston- with a break in the middle for sushi, wine, and a little shopping in Soho. Fun day and, thankfully, easy drive. For anyone who cannot be in NYC this Thursday evening, I will post some pictures when I return!

The show opens Thursday- 526 West 26th Street, NY, NY 6-8PM- please join me if you are in the area!
I have just seen the list of artists included in this show and I am 1 of only 20! So, so exciting. The juror, David A. Ross, is the former director of the Whitney Museum of American Art. What an honor this is!
An artist residency is an opportunity for an artist to step out of their world and have the gift of time. I will have my own room, my own studio, and all meals cooked for me. I will be there with 6 other creative people- songwriters, painters, sculptures, and writers.

As is my habit, I left them in the studio for way too long, and they died. As I was transporting them to the garbage, however, a leaf fell onto my drawing table, and I was inspired!
A new body of work is emerging now, and the relationship between the shape and feel of the bird skins and dead leaves is really speaking to me. They both represent beauty in death, and the fragile state of life for me.

Cheers!

Kimberly
KBeckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414318780091485828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400254784358147609.post-22834075996455317092014-03-08T19:12:00.001-08:002014-03-08T19:12:59.376-08:00SDA Show- Fiber in thePresent TenseToday was the opening of the Fiber in the present Tense show in New Bedford!

Here are a few shots of the opening-

Cheers!

Kimberly
KBeckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414318780091485828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400254784358147609.post-35775834925253560482014-02-28T15:06:00.001-08:002014-02-28T15:06:01.660-08:00Lots of News!I have exciting news! We hit so many great locations- Mood (and I got to meet Swatch, the famous dog at Mood), Tinsel Trading, Purl in Soho, Uniqlo (crazy Japanese dept store on Broadway in Soho) and more. We also had a totally civilized afternoon Tea at Alice's Tea Cup, Japanese one night and Ollie's the other night! Lots of fun supplies came back with me to get the creative juices flowing for the second semester of my graduate work.

Cheers!

Kimberly
KBeckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414318780091485828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400254784358147609.post-92050600904985372482014-01-27T05:38:00.000-08:002014-01-27T05:38:29.773-08:00New Mounting for artwork!I think I may have finally found a solution to the age old problem of "framing" fiber art.
I presented my Alphabet project, and was given a chance to step back and look at the first large body of work for my masters program.
It went very well. I felt that I had truly given it everything I had, and the feedback was both helpful and encouraging.

The next step in the process is to pull the most successful pieces from this collection and expand on those ideas.

I have decided to continue to pursue the idea of memorializing the dead. I see beauty in death, and have always been fascinated by the ghosts that linger in old spaces. Learning from our past and watching how cultures celebrate the dead is a very telling exercise. Graveyards, mummification, taxidermy, burial ceremonies, etc. all tell us so much.

In this first piece, I have again painted bird skins (taxidermy birds that are often a century old), but this time I am focused on songbirds in particular. Along with my interest in the past, I have been paying close attention to the contemporary destruction of songbird populations as well as pollinators (birds, bats, bees). I have embroidered the poppies over the birds as a reference to the WWI poppies representing mourning.

My sketchbooks have been filling up with images of poppies and my Pinterest boards as well!

The next piece will be much more architectural in nature- hmmmm.... We will see how this goes!

Thanks for following!

Cheers!

Kimberly

Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
KBeckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414318780091485828noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400254784358147609.post-83463686932073319882013-12-24T06:49:00.001-08:002013-12-24T06:49:08.962-08:00Happy Holidays and best wishes for an exciting New Year!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
KBeckerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10414318780091485828noreply@blogger.com0
