We were not really supposed to be taking pictures, so I just took a few shots to get ideas for my booth in Columbus, Ohio this spring. In the first one, she used brown Kraft paper on her walls, which I have been considering. In the second, she painted the walls with flat black paint and wrote on them like a chalkboard, and the third had really sweet porcelain, but the picture didn't come out as clear as I had hoped! Anyhow, fun show- saw some old friends from RISD and some new ones as well!

Looking forward to the TNNA show this spring!

I am going to NYC tonight to spend the weekend walking the New York International Gift Fair. Why, might you ask, would I do such a crazy thing? I am scoping out the show to start brainstorming a booth for when I arrive there next year with my paintings and cross stitch collection! Wish me (and my feet) luck!

I have launched a Kickstarter! What is a Kickstarter you ask? Kickstarter is a website that allows artists, inventors, musicians, filmmakers to raise dollars for launching a new project.
The way it works is that many people donate small dollars to a project rather than one or two grants or large commitments. When you donate you receive something in return- the level of donation decides the gift.

Progress on the needlework!

The first image I am including in this post is of my painting "Red Umbrella" partially stitched! I am so excited to see it coming to life with linen and floss! Below the stitched version I have included the painting so you can see how the paintings translate.

More to come- and now that the Somerville Open Studios is over, I will be preparing for the RISD Alumni Sale. The alumni sale is a great show to come to if you have December 3rd free. I will be showing many paintings and hopefully have a few of the cross stitch pieces finished and ready to show. The patterns for the cross stitch pieces will be available to purchase later this winter.

Boulangerie St. Louis

This painting may get a few more tweeks, but I wanted to post it anyhow! This was one of the bakeries we could walk to on the Ile St. Louis in Paris. The almond croissants were actually heavy because of all of the almond paste and butter in them! This painting is the fourth in the Paris series, and will definitely be converted to a cross stitch pattern in the very near future!$200.00

Stitching a painting

Here are images of the magical transformation of my paintings into needle working patterns- cross stitch to be exact. The painting I am starting with is my snow covered house piece. I am planning on using tiny glass beads to accentuate the highlights of snow and the red berries in the wreath. The sage colored linen will help the overall tone of the finished work.

Stitching, blogging and tweeting

I have found that stitching in my free moments is a truly satisfying experience. I feel a deep need to work with my hands and block out the rest of the world whenever possible. When I am not stitching, I must admit, I am tweeting and playing on Pinterest! If you have a visual bone in your body, I would recommend looking at www.pinterest.com. Good fun- really!

Creative Connection

I spent the past 3 days at a conference of sorts. It was really like camp for artists and makers. The Creative Connection is a new gathering, only two years old, where successful, interesting and talented women from all over the world gather to share their experiences, give advise and support one another. It is incredibly helpful to know that you are not the only one out there and that you are not the first woman to try something and stumble along the way.

I am re-energized and believe that I have some new tools which will help me to spread the word about my blog, art and life. My newest project is very exciting. I am translating some of my small paintings into cross stitch patterns. I have researched extensively and found that most of the offerings in the market for stitchers have a very folky feel to them. I am putting a contemporary spin on them and reaching out to the younger generations who are looking for a way to relax, decompress, and "single task" for a while. The image I have attached is an example of what it might look like to stitch one of my paintings.
More to come- I will be posting information once the patterns and kits are ready to sell!

Paris Shop Window

I just love this picture. We did a lot of window shopping that day, as it was Assention Day in Paris which meant that the shops in this particular neighborhood (and many others) were unexpectedly closed. But what a blessing because I captured this great photograph!

This was the one painting I did while in Paris. Sitting in our living room, I especially enjoyed looking out through the flower boxes and down onto the street at the hustle and bustle of life on the Ile St. Louis. I decided I had to capture it while I was experiencing it!

Paris Catacombs

Paris is sitting on top of miles and miles of underground tunnels known as stone mines. In the late eighteenth century the bones of approximately 6 million Parisians was moved down into these mines. The result is astounding. The bones were carefully arranged, so they almost look like lace patterns. Quite beautiful. I have always had a strange love of graveyards and bones- so this was a highlight of our trip for me!

I am going to post some of my favorite photos from Paris occasionally for fun! Paris is a truly magical city- inspirational, beautiful, and delicious! This shot not only captures a nice play of the sun and the Eiffel Tower, but it also shows you the closest I got to the top! The crowds waiting to go up were amazing- we skipped the trip to the peak and rented bikes to ride along the Seine instead!

Please join me for Somerville Open Studios this weekend at my studio at 6 Vernon Street: Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1, from 12-6.

At the Vernon Street studios alone there are over 100 artists in two buildings. I'll have dozens of paintings for sale in the $75.00-125.00 range, as well as a selection of larger architectural paintings.

My studio is on the 3rd floor of 6 Vernon Street, down the hall on the left. The studio building, Rogers Foam, is at the corner of Vernon and Central Streets--Central comes off Highland Ave. halfway between Davis Square and McGrath Highway.

Visions of Sugarplums...

I shot this picture with my iphone while walking to pick up my daughter on a snowy evening after 20" of snow blanketed our town. I loved the glow of the lights and the whiteness of the snow against the dark house. I imagine a warm fire burning in the fireplace inside!

Cambridge home sketch

I am finally finding a rhythm with my work, and now we have a blizzard coming our way! Shoveling tomorrow, painting after that!
This is the first stage of the next house painting in the tattooing series. I begin with a charcoal drawing to which I then apply a light oil turpentine wash. This step sets the tone for the piece.
I have had several requests for more of these, so here I go! This one is oil on canvas- 8x10".

This is a very small diptych- the inspiration to do it as a diptych came to me after seeing a friend's painting. Check out his website- http://www.spgoodman.com/
I once had a teacher who wondered why you would do a diptych, and not just a single canvas. In this case, I feel like it is joining neighbors together- each canvas primarily containing a single house. I also, however, like the joining of parts that you accomplish with two instead of one.

RISD Alumni Holiday sale

The holiday sale was a success in many ways. I sold paintings and I got to meet many interesting people- artists and shoppers. It is a very high quality sale and worth a visit if you have never come before. I am posting pictures of my table and my friend, who had a table right next to mine, Yuh's table. Yuh makes beautiful silk and wool scarves- such a treat for the eyes!

I am moving into my new studio in Somerville this weekend- lots of exciting stuff. I have not been posting lately due to several important events- first- of course, was Thanksgiving! I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday with family and friends.
My big announcement is that I have signed a lease on a studio! I will have a space at the Vernon Street Studios in Somerville, MA! This will help a lot for my larger works. I have been painting in my attic with no vertical walls!
The other distractions are the two shows I will be selling work in this month- the RISD Alumni Sale is this Saturday at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. There will be about 300 RISD alumni selling their artwork. And, lastly, the Belmont Gallery of Art Holiday sale will be opening next week. There will be artwork shown which you can purcahse and take with you for holiday giving.

I hope to get back to daily painting and posting next week! Until then, come see me at one of the shows!

Christmas Lilies

In the same theme as my larger pieces, I have been continuing with graphite on mylar. This is a painting done with powdered graphite and galkyd medium on mylar. the architectural details are not enhanced in the larger oil paintings, so these seem like a nice balance.

Two Day Lilies

My neighbor brought me these beautiful lilies and I have watched them open up, one at a time, over the last week. Perfect subjects for a painting!

Artichoke

Just returned from my 20 year RISD reunion- and needed to just get paint on a brush and work. This artichoke was at whole foods, and I thought it was beautiful! Hard to paint, but the rhythm kicked in and I feel I caught the feeling of it.

Wish I were 18 again and heading off to freshman year- but maybe if I get the MacDowell fellowship, it will sort of feel like that!

This is a work in progress. I have been exploring painting with a looser hand- a less illustrative approach, and I am very excited about it. This is a church in downtown Boston that I shot while walking around the city with my husband and kids. I like the gray sky and cool, rainy feel to this painting, although that day it was warm and sunny! I will post again once I have added the finishing touches.

I am finally back to work on a new painting! Head colds really take the drive out of a person! I am happy to say that the school year is proceeding well though, and I am enjoying the cooler temps of fall (my studio is not 120 degrees!)

Trying to keep up with my blog- but right now I am working toward a deadline for an application to MacDowell. I am working much larger, so the photos are not very good- hard to shoot with even light and no glare! Tattooed Town Hall

OK- here is the beginning of a new body of work I am developing. I am, as some of you may have seen in the recent past, very attracted to old buildings- churches, meeting houses, barns, etc. This is an old town hall in Deer Isle, Maine. I have begun "tattooing" my paintings with henna like patterns. The surfaces of these beautiful white clapboard buildings is crying out to be decorated- beautiful graffiti, of a sort. Let me know what you think. I am working on a much larger piece as well, and will be posting it's development in stages.

We spend a week each summer at this beautiful spot. This year, we had the honor of witnessing a bald eagle and it's baby- learning how to fly! AMAZING! I mention this, because, as I was painting this, a neighbor came over and pointed out that I was looking right at the nest while painting this scene- and hadn't even noticed!

Birch forest

My son Henry took a photo of this beautiful forest while on a wilderness survival trip. I love the birches.

Pastis Birch Tree

I am struggling to get to my studio today, so I thought I would post a study I did of a birch. I was out in the field painting, and didn't have anything to quickly sketch on, so I used a postcard I had picked up at a bar below the High Line in NYC. Sometimes the best paintings are the quick ones!

Winter Street Church, Bath Maine

I love the intense whiteness of this church, and on this particular day, the stormy sky behind it was fabulous! This is the scene at Henry's camp- the boys live in these yomes and teepees all summer- cook their own food over an open fire, pump their water up from a natural spring, keep food cold through an ice house, and have no phones, flashlights (only candles), watches- nothing- he loved it!

OK- here's a leap for me. I saw this cluster of buildings on our way to Pillsbury State park and knew they would be the subject of several paintings. The image is made up of layers of texture and color. I see this as a study for larger pieces as well.

Maxixe Cukes

These are a type of Brazilian cucumber that a group of UMass Amherst graduate students are selling at our local Whole Foods Market. I thought they were beautiful and bought them to paint, as well as delicious and have enjoyed eating!

This is another view out over the lake from our campsite- quite nice! While we were there, we were lucky enough to witness a baby loon being taught to fish for it's food by it's parents- they are amazing birds! Really spectacular!

This is the scene you see when you walk into my daughter's camp in Vermont. The lake is beautiful, the forest peaceful, and the people are amazing. Every time we arrive, Madeleine goes running down to the edge of the water and smiles!

Summer Hydrangea

I love these blue flowers! The previous owners planted a small hydrangea bush in our backyard in the shade- not well placed, and actually, sort of in the way- but it perseveres and blooms despite the lack of sunlight and care! I love it!

Exciting News!

I am very excited to announce that I got a booth at the Rhode Island School of Design's holiday alumni art sale! The show is on December 4 at the Rhode Island Convention Center, and I will be selling my paintings there!

I am finishing up a commission piece today, so I will not be posting a painting, but am so thrilled to have a spot at the Holiday sale that I had to tell everyone!

Also, this is a good time to mention that I can frame paintings for an additional 75.00. They make fantastic wedding presents!

Brownstone Entry

This painting was done to exactly replicate a photo I took of this building. I took it from a strange angle, and had to wipe this painting twice before finally getting the proportions correct. I know it looks off balance, but it is finally correct! I am interested in changing the the perspective and angles of the subject matter- but it is hard- you instinctively want to paint what your mind says is right, not what is really there!

For everyone who knows NYC, this scene will be very familiar. The delis, of which there are so many, have a bounty of flowers out front all the time! When I first moved to NYC, I remember being amazed that I could have such gorgeous flowers so inexpensively all the time!

When I took this shot, the truck going by was perfect!

Here is the finished painting. I am really enjoying painting urban landscapes. This painting had an interesting challenge with the iron bars on the windows that stick out in that dramatic way- I am happy with the results though.

Three Limes and a Lemon

OK- I am back from my camping week- and will be posting paintings taken from my photos in the weeks to come, but first I needed a good old fashioned still life to jump start me!

I couldn't bring the oils, as I had originally intended, because we carried everything we needed for 5 days on our backs, and I couldn't figure out how to get the wet paintings out safely when the week was over (not to mention the fact that I couldn't carry one more ounce of stuff in!).

Water Tower

NYC is water tower capital of the world! I had to paint one image including a water tower. I took so many shots of NYC that I cannot be sure, but I believe this was the view from my friend's porch- she lives in a tall building on the upper west side and has great views!

Buildings are hard to paint. Especially when there is no foliage to mask the edges!

Unfortunately the weather here in MA is very hot, and my studio is in the large attic space in our house! I am doing the best I can, but may miss a day here and there for posts due to the 100 degrees!

Four Figs

I am taking a break from landscapes and redirecting to still life painting for today. Figs are such a rich color- and because of their shape, tend to nestle up to one another nicely.

I have been struggling with backgrounds for a while now, but recently heard an interview with Carol Marine, another daily painter, where she said she always uses fabrics as drop clothes, and never makes it up. Here I have tried this and like the results. By the way, I highly recommend Carol Marine's blog- http://carolmarine.blogspot.com!

NYC Brooklyn Block completed

This is the finished painting with color added. Yesterday I posted the charcoal under painting and the grey scale wash.

We were in NYC with friends last week and did a half day in Brooklyn to see their old stomping grounds. I saw this block of row houses and knew I had my next painting. The light was beautiful and the trees were just full enough to be there, but not so much that they blocked your view of the scene.
