This is a slightly more abstract rendering of the beautiful oranges with leaves that I have been painting.

Happy Holidays to everyone, and best wishes for a fabulous 2011!

I tried to get to my studio today, and found all I had concentration for was my coffee- so I painted it! More after the holidays.

Cambridge Neighborhood

This is a very small diptych- the inspiration to do it as a diptych came to me after seeing a friend's painting. Check out his website- http://www.spgoodman.com/
I once had a teacher who wondered why you would do a diptych, and not just a single canvas. In this case, I feel like it is joining neighbors together- each canvas primarily containing a single house. I also, however, like the joining of parts that you accomplish with two instead of one.

I am working on a new large painting, and am posting the progress. I have done a smaller graphite on mylar painting with this same image, so it may be familiar.

More to come on this one.....

This little clementine was charming all by itself. Oranges are in season and fun to paint- I will hopefully pull myself away from this subject matter soon!

The intense color of the orange, along with the complimentary sweep of green leaves made this an easy painting to execute.

RISD Alumni Holiday sale

The holiday sale was a success in many ways. I sold paintings and I got to meet many interesting people- artists and shoppers. It is a very high quality sale and worth a visit if you have never come before. I am posting pictures of my table and my friend, who had a table right next to mine, Yuh's table. Yuh makes beautiful silk and wool scarves- such a treat for the eyes!
Welcome to all of my new subscribers! I handed out hundreds of my business cards and encouraged everyone to subscribe- so stay tuned for daily paintings to begin being posted again!
I am moving into my new studio in Somerville this weekend- lots of exciting stuff. Oh, and one other thing- the Belmont Gallery of Art has a fabulous holiday show up with many wonderful pieces of art for gift giving. So, if you live in the Belmont area, stop by the Homer building and take the elevator to the top floor to do some holiday shopping!

Upcoming Shows

I have not been posting lately due to several important events- first- of course, was Thanksgiving! I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday with family and friends.
My big announcement is that I have signed a lease on a studio! I will have a space at the Vernon Street Studios in Somerville, MA! This will help a lot for my larger works. I have been painting in my attic with no vertical walls!
The other distractions are the two shows I will be selling work in this month- the RISD Alumni Sale is this Saturday at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. There will be about 300 RISD alumni selling their artwork. And, lastly, the Belmont Gallery of Art Holiday sale will be opening next week. There will be artwork shown which you can purcahse and take with you for holiday giving.

I hope to get back to daily painting and posting next week! Until then, come see me at one of the shows!

Pink Lilies

The lily guy only had pink this time- so I am now using color!

Original oil paintings make great Christmas gifts! I am selling them for the lower prioces as I have listed them on the blog until the RISD alumni sale on December 4. After that, the prices will go up. I am selling them more quickly, so if you are interested- this is the time!

Christmas Lilies

I am really excited to have more lilies to paint now that these are finally at the end of their life! I have some purple lilies next. This series is nice change, but I am also gearing up to do another large piece as well.
I am getting ready for the RISD sale in December, and will be bumping up all of my prices for the show, so grab a painting or two for Christmas gifts while they are still low!

In the same theme as my larger pieces, I have been continuing with graphite on mylar. This is a painting done with powdered graphite and galkyd medium on mylar. the architectural details are not enhanced in the larger oil paintings, so these seem like a nice balance.

My neighbor brought me these beautiful lilies and I have watched them open up, one at a time, over the last week. Perfect subjects for a painting!
Amazingly, this painting sold before the email announcing it had time to be sent. I have planned for a series of lily paintings over the next week, so stay tuned for more!

Providence, RI

This is the largest painting I have done in my small studio- 48"x36". I debated whether to put graffiti or tattooing on this piece, but every time I tried, it didn't blend. So this building will stay clear of decoration!

Work in progress

New work- this painting is 48x36". A house in Providence that I took a photo of at my reunion weekend. I am showing the initial layout that I painted in with a wash of gray, and then the beginning of filling in the color.

More to come...

Artichoke

Just returned from my 20 year RISD reunion- and needed to just get paint on a brush and work. This artichoke was at whole foods, and I thought it was beautiful! Hard to paint, but the rhythm kicked in and I feel I caught the feeling of it.

Wish I were 18 again and heading off to freshman year- but maybe if I get the MacDowell fellowship, it will sort of feel like that!

Park Street Church

This is a work in progress. I have been exploring painting with a looser hand- a less illustrative approach, and I am very excited about it. This is a church in downtown Boston that I shot while walking around the city with my husband and kids. I like the gray sky and cool, rainy feel to this painting, although that day it was warm and sunny! I will post again once I have added the finishing touches.

Common St, Belmont

As you have probably noticed, I have been focusing more on larger paintings and less on small daily paintings. My posts may be less frequent for a while, but I will post updates on works in progress when I think of it!

This is a larger painting- 24"x24"- oil on canvas

A grand old house around the corner from me that I always admire, and finally have incorporated into a painting. My desire was for the henna to resemble ivy growing up the sides of the house.

Work in progress

I am finally back to work on a new painting! Head colds really take the drive out of a person! I am happy to say that the school year is proceeding well though, and I am enjoying the cooler temps of fall (my studio is not 120 degrees!)

This is the beginning stage of a new painting of a church here in Belmont, MA- more to come...

Also, for anyone in the Boston area, we are having an opening Friday night at the Belmont Gallery of Art for the Belmont artist show- all are welcome and encouraged to attend- we have some real talent here in Belmont!

Deer Isle Home- with henna

Trying to keep up with my blog- but right now I am working toward a deadline for an application to MacDowell. I am working much larger, so the photos are not very good- hard to shoot with even light and no glare! This is 2x4 ft- oil on canvas- and there is a second panel to be hung with this- I will post the professional shot when I get it. I am really enjoying this work- more to come soon!

Tattooed Town Hall

OK- here is the beginning of a new body of work I am developing. I am, as some of you may have seen in the recent past, very attracted to old buildings- churches, meeting houses, barns, etc. This is an old town hall in Deer Isle, Maine. I have begun "tattooing" my paintings with henna like patterns. The surfaces of these beautiful white clapboard buildings is crying out to be decorated- beautiful graffiti, of a sort. Let me know what you think. I am working on a much larger piece as well, and will be posting it's development in stages.

Damariscotta Lake

We spend a week each summer at this beautiful spot. This year, we had the honor of witnessing a bald eagle and it's baby- learning how to fly! AMAZING! I mention this, because, as I was painting this, a neighbor came over and pointed out that I was looking right at the nest while painting this scene- and hadn't even noticed!

IZZE

The drink of choice during our vacation in Maine. I was looking around for something to paint that would really represent our vacation with our friends, and the Izze bottle was it (with the exception, of course, of the lake, cabins woods- those paintings will be coming along later in the week).

We get a farm share for about 4 months every year, and this year has been fabulous! If you live in the Belmont, Arlington area, and are thinking about a farm share for next year- Piccadilly Farms is amazing! Pastis Birch Tree

I am struggling to get to my studio today, so I thought I would post a study I did of a birch. I was out in the field painting, and didn't have anything to quickly sketch on, so I used a postcard I had picked up at a bar below the High Line in NYC. Sometimes the best paintings are the quick ones!
