Leaning

This painting is oil on canvas. It is 8x12". I arrange my still life objects to interact as if they were people. I felt that the pear on the right looked like it was slouched up against the other pear. It is amazing how you can change the whole feel of the piece by the arrangement.

Two Yellow Pears

Two Yellow Pears- this is another 6x6" oil on panel. I am gessoing the panels using a pallette knife, which gives me the vertical and horizontal striping in the underlayers. I really like this effect and plan on exploring it further.

Clementines

These Clementines are such a beautiful shade of orange, I think you may see many paintings of them this week! This oil painting is 6x12" and done, again, on board. I am enjoying working in this proportion.

3/23/10 3 Pears

Painting fruit can be so satisfying. I enjoy seeing the pears as people- each one has a personality. In this painting, the one to the right almost appears to be listening in on the other two.
This painting, oil on board, 6"x12".

I am working daily now. Sometimes an assignment from my painting class at RISD consumes the day, and other times I am able to do my own work. The simple act of picking up a paintbrush every day is great.

3/22/10 Hydrangea painting

This oil painting is only 4x4". I love blue hydrangea and thought the mason jar was a nice balance to the large bunch of flowers.

I will be showing many of the paintings I am posting during Belmont/ Watertown Open Studios. My office in Belmont Center will double as a gallery. It should be fun to see the work hung in a "gallery" setting! More on the dates and times to come!

3/14/10 Bird's nest study

This is oil on panel. I have collected nests over the years and chose one to paint today. Much of the materials in bird's nests are man made, and this one is no exception.

In class we are focusing on black and white studies. We are learning about form rather than details. As important as that is, I also enjoy working on the gestural effects of an object, and the nests affords me this freedom.
